How does your desk or cubicle look at work? Is it clean and organized, or does it look like a whirlwind went through?

Some people operate under the notion that a messy desk is the sign of a productive person. The truth is that impressing the boss means having an organized work area that will also increase productivity.

Your boss wants the best possible work from you, and that can only be achieved by maintaining a clean work area.

Work Flow

A clean work area means that you will be better able to manage your work flow. You can designate a system that identifies work to be done as it comes in, and then have a spot for work that is completed and needs to be distributed.

When you are extremely organized, you can arrange your incoming and outgoing work by deadline dates so that you never miss a deadline.

Not only will this increase your productivity dramatically, but it will give you positive exposure to your manager and the other members of the company’s management team.

Reliable Storage

People who keep their work space clean have what is referred to as a reliable storage system in place. When you look at the desk of a disorganized person, it can sometimes take days to find an important document. When important documents get lost, your boss starts to lose faith in your quality of work.

A work space based on reliable storage has an organized filing system that can be used to find whatever document is needed. Your file folders are clearly marked, and you take the time to put documents in their proper folders.

Maintaining a reliable storage work space accomplishes two things. The first thing it accomplishes is that it allows you to find important documents quickly so that you can respond to your boss’ requests in a timely manner.

The other benefit of a reliable storage area is that other people can find documents they need in your desk when you are not at work. You may have to miss work one day, and that will be the day that the boss needs that important piece of paperwork.

When he sees how organized your work area is and can easily find what he is looking for, then that is something that will impress him.

Workload Increase

If you want to become someone your boss can rely on, then you need to be able to handle periodic increases in your workload. When your desk is disorganized, adding new work to it can be disastrous.

But an organized work area makes it much easier for you to assimilate more work and become even more productive. When your boss realizes that he can rely on you to get your job done and then cover for others every once in a while, then you become someone that he looks to as a key employee in the company.

Your work area gives a comprehensive impression of how hard you work and how much you value productivity. When you take the time to keep your work area neat and organized, then you will be able to improve your productivity and maintain high work quality.

Your boss will take notice and it will help you to move up in the company.
